Vereya is one of the smallest and most cozy towns in the Moscow region, first mentioned in chronicles in 1371. V.I. Dal defined the word "vereya" as "...a pole on which the gate towels are hung," which is reflected in the coat of arms. Vereya was part of a chain of fortified towns on the western borders of the Moscow Principality. The surviving earthen ramparts surrounding the ancient kremlin remind us of that era.
From 1432 to 1486, Vereya was the center of an appanage principality ruled by Prince Mikhail Andreevich Vereisky, grandson of Dmitry Donskoy. During this time, Vereya minted its own coins.
The Vereyans played a major role during the Kazan campaigns. It was in Vereya, during the reign of Prince Vladimir Andreevich, that the Nativity Cathedral was founded in 1552 in honor of these campaigns.
The 18th century saw the rapid development of the city. Enterprising Vereya merchants traded along the Protva and Oka rivers, at the time one of the country's most important trade arteries. Vereya became one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the Moscow Governorate. In 1782, Vereya became the center of the Vereya district. In 1784, Catherine the Great approved the city plan. Merchants' houses remain in the city, many of which are listed as regional and federal monuments.
Vereya was particularly noted during the Patriotic War of 1812. Vereya was the first Russian city liberated from the French, while Napoleon's army was still stationed in Moscow. Partisan detachments of Vereya residents played a major role in the liberation of Vereya by General Dorokhov's detachment. In 1815, General I.S. Dorokhov was buried in the Nativity Cathedral. A monument to the brave general, erected on the earthen rampart, commemorates the events of those days. This monument is now the city's calling card.
During the Great Patriotic War, Vereya became the first and only city in the Moscow region where young Komsomol members independently formed an underground group. In Vereya, they are known as the "Vereya Young Guards." Their heroism was highly recognized by the country, and all five heroes were posthumously awarded medals "For Courage." Fierce fighting took place for Vereya in January 1942, and the city was heavily damaged.
In 2017, by decision of the Moscow Region Government, the city was awarded the prestigious title of "City of Military Valor."
Vereya boasts over 50 historical and architectural monuments concentrated in a small area, making it very convenient for tourists. The city boasts wonderful landscapes, a rich history, and ancient churches (six in the city, including the unique Old Believer Church of the Intercession).
Particular attention is paid to the restoration of the city's historical and cultural heritage. From 2020 to 2023, large-scale reconstruction work was carried out in the city center in the style and spirit of a late 19th-century provincial town.

The History and Ethnography Hall displays minerals, ancient tools, and artifacts from the Patriotic War of 1812, as well as items from a merchant's home and a peasant farmstead. You can see a gramophone, a candy-making machine, costumes, and more. The hall dedicated to the events of the Great Patriotic War (1941–1945) displays authentic documents from WWII veterans, artifacts, and photographs.
