The village of Velikoye in the Gavrilov-Yamsky District is one of the oldest in the Yaroslavl Region. Its origins date back to the early 13th century. In the Middle Ages, it could rightfully be called the "Great Palace Village." It was often a refuge for Russian tsars. Peter the Great passed through the village on numerous occasions. He gifted Velikoye to his comrade-in-arms, Anikita Repnin, for his participation in the Battle of Poltava. Field Marshal Repnin, in turn, built the Church of the Nativity in the village in honor of the Russian army's victories. Velikoye also distinguished itself as a major trading center, so it was included on the map of Russia as early as 1607. In 2022, Velikoye was included in the association "The Most Beautiful Villages and Towns of Russia."
Sights
Velikoye is home to over 160 cultural heritage sites, including federal monuments: - the mansion-estate of 1st Guild merchant Alexander Lokalov (1888, architect Fyodor Shekhtel). The house has preserved its 19th-century interiors. A unique grotto room resembling a salt cave; - the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin, often referred to as the "Velikoye Selo Kremlin." Not far from the Kremlin is the Black Pond. Rings of streets intersected by alleys surround the Black Pond (the village has a radial-ring layout, similar to St. Petersburg). In 1985, the Black Pond was designated a natural monument. On the shore of the Black Pond, there was a pottery stall where clay products were traditionally sold. The square and embankment have become a popular place for strolls among residents and visitors.
Food, Gastronomy, and Terroirs
Velikoye is traditionally famous for its cherry orchards. Cherries are the main symbol of the village. Delicious cherry jam, cherry compotes, and the renowned cherry liqueur have delighted every visitor to the Velikoye region since time immemorial.
