Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin in the village of Ustye
The church is located on the left bank of the Sukhona River, 57 km from the city of Totma. The Church of the Intercession is a valuable monument of 18th-century Russian architecture. The church was built with the "diligence" of a local native, merchant Volokitin, in 1781. The heated side chapel was rebuilt in 1897 with funds from St. Petersburg citizen Pavel Pozharsky, and in 1900, the brickwork of the new bell tower was completed with funds from the same benefactor.
The church has two side chapels: one in the name of All Saints and the other in honor of St. Procopius of Ustyug. This church is the only church in the Totma district with preserved interior decoration. The summer church's iconostasis is a carved wooden work, created in 1781 by Totma artisans, with paintings from the same period. In the chapel of St. Procopius of Ustyug, the marble iconostasis with glass inlay decoration was the work of Moscow artisans, dating from the late 19th century.
The Church of the Intercession is the only one in the eastern Vologda Oblast that was not closed during the Soviet era, and services were held there throughout the 20th century. Valuable monuments of painting, sculpture, decorative and applied arts, and book printing have been preserved in the Church of the Intercession. A religious Orthodox community has been established at the church, and services are held.
