The city's main wealth is its unique natural resources: relict waters of varying mineralization, flowing from self-flowing mineral springs; the sulfide-silt mud "Starorusskaya," unique in its composition, and clean air saturated with light negative ions.
The city's appearance is adorned with ancient architectural monuments: the Transfiguration Monastery (12th century); the Church of Mina (14th century); the Church of St. Nicholas (14th-19th centuries); the Trinity Church and the Resurrection Cathedral (late 17th century), and others.
The Staraya Russa region is the birthplace of such world-famous figures as:
Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky - Russian writer;
Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff - Russian composer, virtuoso pianist, and conductor;
Vasily Semyonovich Svarog - painter, poster artist, cartoonist, illustrator, and musician;
Nikolai Vasilyevich Tomsky - an outstanding Soviet sculptor, monumentalist, teacher, and professor;
Mikhail Mikhailovich Pomortsev - the first Russian aerologist, a major figure in aeronautics, and an inventor in the field of rocketry.
Vladislav Mikhailovich Glinka - Soviet historian and writer, Honored Worker of Culture of the RSFSR;
Vyacheslav Ivanovich Marchenko - Soviet and Russian writer and marine painter. Author of works such as "Shelonik," "The Slovenian Sea," "Sparrow Night," and "Pages of Memory."
Food, Gastronomy, and Terroirs.
The city's gastronomy scene is actively developing. Every year, new themed restaurants and cafes with local cuisine appear. These include traditional kulebyakas, themed menus from the time of Fyodor Dostoevsky, and fish dishes from Lake Ilmen.
Accommodation
The city has many comfortable hotels and a sanatorium with mineral waters. The area also boasts recreation centers and a glamping park on the shores of Lake Ilmen. New accommodations are added every year.
