Stan is a naturally blessed part of the Russian hinterland, preserved in almost its pristine beauty. The village stands on the left bank of the Medveditsa River, near an ancient portage between the Medveditsa and Tvertsa river systems—the main land crossing on the waterway between Vladimir-Suzdal Rus' and Veliky Novgorod.
Sights
On the high rocky bank stands the main landmark—the functioning Pokrovskaya Church, built in 1777, a monument of wooden architecture. The church has been preserved in its original form: it was built by Karelians and reflects the traditions of Karelian parishes in its decoration.
Within the village boundaries, the river has given residents three pools. If you wish, you can stroll through the old Stan (formerly the village of Udvorino), which stretches along the Medveditsa River. Here you will find cozy smoke baths, crane wells, and characteristic Karelian buildings. This amazing place houses the House of Karelian Culture, which could be called a comprehensive museum of Tver Karelia.
This ethnographic house features a Karelian hut, furnished according to ancient customs, a workshop with all the tools and equipment, as well as surprises from the master, and a very cozy, authentic café where you'll be sure to be treated to skantsi, Kegri's favorite delicacy. You'll also learn here who Kegri is, and why his arrival was both feared and anticipated in the old days. Incidentally, he still comes here—at least once a year, when Stana celebrates Kegri Day, the Karelian harvest festival.
