Shiryaevo is a small village in the Samara Region, located in a picturesque spot on the right bank of the Volga, surrounded by the Zhiguli Mountains. The village is located within the Zhiguli Nature Reserve.
Sights
The village is famous for the fact that Ilya Repin worked here for several months in 1870 with his artist friends Fyodor Vasiliev and Yevgeny Makarov. Thanks to this event, a museum complex was established in Shiryaevo, and Repin's house is part of it. Other notable buildings include the museum of Alexander Shiryaevets, a Russian poet of the Silver Age and a native of the village, and the Vdovin estate, built in 1910 and now housed as an exhibition hall with an ethnographic exhibit.
It is known that it was in Shiryaevo that Repin began painting his famous painting "Barge Haulers on the Volga" (now housed in the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg). He personally interacted with the barge haulers and sought out suitable subjects for his portraits.
The Kamennaya Chasha (Stone Bowl) tract is a unique natural monument within the Samara Luka National Nature Reserve.
It is a mountain basin formed by five ravines on the slopes of mountains up to 300 meters high. The deep ravine, surrounded by rocky ridges, is considered one of the most beautiful spots in the Zhiguli Mountains.
The name "Kamennaya Chasha" likely derives from the fact that several springs once flowed into the ravine, forming a kind of stone bowl. According to local legend, the springs of the Kamennaya Chasha are the tears of the Mistress of the Zhiguli Mountains, who was doomed to eternal solitude.
Today, several springs operate here. The most famous of these is the Spring of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, whose waters are considered healing. A chapel has been erected here.
Popova Gora is one of the mountains of the Zhiguli Upland. It is located near the village of Shiryaevo in the Zhigulevsk urban district.
The mountain's name derives from the fact that a priest once lived on one of its slopes. The mountain is located northwest of Shiryaevo. From its summit, beautiful views open up of the village, the Volga, other peaks of the Zhiguli Mountains, and the natural beauty of the Samara Bend.
The mountain's main attraction is the Shiryaevo Adits, the remains of artificial caves where limestone was mined from the second half of the 19th century to the early 20th century. The adits comprise an entire underground complex of artificial caves reaching depths of 100 meters. Known entrances to the adits are found in several locations, the most popular near the mountains being Popova and Verblud, near Shiryaevo. Another unique feature of the adits is the bats that inhabit them, a unique population protected by the state.
Food, Gastronomy, Terroir
The village of Shiryaevo is home to the unique Beshchevo cherry, developed in the late 1930s thanks to the efforts of local breeder Alexey Viktorovich Beshchevo. This is the only cherry variety that grows in the special calcareous soil of the Volga coast. Distinguishing features of the variety include: low growth, excellent yield, large berries, juicy flesh, thin skin, delicious taste, resistance to suckers, healthy nutrition, and vitamins, trace elements, and natural acids.
