Pavlovsk was founded by Peter the Great in 1709 as Russia's most important southern fortress and shipyard. Here, Russian admirals Senyavin and Ushakov built innovative ships, the majestic appearance of which prompted the Ottoman Empire to abandon the Northern Black Sea region and Crimea. In the late 18th century, Pavlovsk, located at the heart of the Great Cherkasy Highway—the country's major trade artery—rapidly grew wealthy. Stone churches and public buildings were erected. Pavlovsk was transformed into a modern merchant town with sidewalks, parks, and even its own tower clock, which has kept the time for 150 years. The Apostle Paul, the city's patron saint, has protected Pavlovsk and its residents throughout this time. And the Don River continues to reward residents and visitors with a bountiful catch.
Attractions
Pavlovsk is the pearl of the Don, an important Russian naval shipyard in the 18th century and a wealthy merchant town in the 19th century. Pavlovsk has retained its historical character to this day. More than 40 architectural monuments are protected by the state. Here, eclecticism borders on Art Nouveau, and neo-Russian style meets French Beaux-Arts. And all this splendor blends beautifully! The house of the 1st Guild merchant Odintsov, a functioning 19th-century fire station, the Merkulov factory, the building of the Real School for Boys, and the Olginskaya Girls' Gymnasium—this is just a partial list of Pavlovsk's architectural masterpieces. The city is located in a unique natural environment at the confluence of three rivers: the Don, Osered, and Samarka rivers "embrace" Pavlovsk on three sides. And Lake Tambov, in the very center of the city, has been a place where legends are reborn for over 200 years. Three kilometers from Pavlovsk is the Belogorsky Monastery, a pilgrimage site for Orthodox Christians and the largest complex of chalk caves in Europe. In summer, you can relax in comfort and get a long-lasting, bronzed Don tan at the city's Central Beach. Catch a real Don bream and try Don pike-perch soup. In the evening, stroll through the cozy old town or immerse yourself in the quiet lagoon of Lake Tambov.
