Village Lalsk

Kirov Oblast

The founding of Lalsk dates back to the reign of Ivan the Terrible and is connected to events that took place in Novgorod in 1570.
This is what can be read in the Ustyug Chronicle: "And when the formidable Tsar Ivan Vasilyevich executed the Novgorodians and his traitors, while he himself was in Novgorod, then some of the citizens... advised them to secretly escape Novgorod... wandered through forests, deserts, and previously impassable places... guided by God, they reached the Lala River, which continues its course in an empty place from Ustyug to Siberia, a distance of 80 miles, and settled there. Those who stayed there began to multiply and became known as Lalechans, after the name of the Lala River."
According to legend, there were 60 people who founded the Lalsk Nikolsky Pogost on the high right bank of the Lala River, with a wooden church dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, the patron saint of traders and travelers. These were the Novgorodians who arrived.

As time passed, Lalsk developed and flourished, facilitated by its location at the intersection of several important trade routes: the river route to Vyatka, the overland route from Ustyug to Moscow, and the Siberian route to China.

The merchants were the pride and glory of Lalsk. Ivan Savateyev, a first-guild merchant from Lalsk and a member of the hundred's living quarters, was the first and repeated leader of trade caravans to China, under orders from Peter the Great himself. In 1910, after a year and a half of travel, Savateyev brought back a net profit of 223,500 rubles in cash and goods, which amounted to 1/14th of Russia's total state income for that year. In 1780, by decree of Empress Catherine II, Lalsk received the status of a district town and its own coat of arms: two marten pelts on a gold field, "as a sign that the residents of this town conduct a significant trade in soft goods."

The Lalsk District Museum of History and Local Lore was established in 1990 on the basis of a public museum, whose collection numbered just over 1,000 exhibits. The museum is located in a mansion that previously belonged to S.M. Pryanishnikov, director of the Naslednikov Sumkin paper mill in Lalsk and brother of the famous Russian Itinerant artist Illarion Pryanishnikov.
The museum's two floors house permanent exhibitions:
1. "Interior of the Pryanishnikov House, late 19th - early 20th centuries" (reconstruction).
2. "The History of the Sumkin Heirs' Paper Mill in Lalsk"
3. "The Lalsk District During the Great Patriotic War"
4. "Flax Cultivation and Processing"
5. "Russian Northern Hut" (reconstruction).
In addition to the permanent exhibitions, approximately 12 new exhibits are created each year, both from the museum's collections and private collections.
Visitors to the museum are offered master classes in weaving, spinning, belt-making, and painting; lectures, museum classes, and events on history, culture, trades, and crafts.
The Lalsk Museum is visited by approximately 8,000 people annually.
Currently, in addition to the main museum building, the museum complex includes a carpentry workshop, located in the former outbuilding of I.E. Shestakov, owner of the Lalsky paper mill (the so-called "Chinese House") and exhibition hall in Luza.
Based on the museum's 2014 performance and a proposal from the Luza District Administration of the Kirov Region, the Lalsky Museum was included in the National Register of "Leading Cultural Institutions of Russia - 2014."
