The region is home to several famous monastic complexes that have left a deep mark on Russian history. Throughout history, the Kirillov land has been a center of spiritual attraction, visited by royal figures and numerous pilgrims seeking spiritual peace and enlightenment.
Religious writer Andrei Muravyov called the Kirillov land "the Russian Thebaid in the North," in analogy with the Egyptian desert where the founders of the hermitage once settled.
1. Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery: The most famous center of the Northern Thebaid is the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, located on the shores of Lake Siverskoye in the center of Kirillov. The monastery was founded in 1397 by the Moscow monk Kirill, a contemporary and follower of St. Sergius of Radonezh. 2. Voskresensky Goritsky Convent: On the banks of the Sheksna River, 7 km from Kirillov, stands the Voskresensky Goritsky Convent, an architectural ensemble dating from the 16th to 19th centuries. The convent was founded in 1544 by Euphrosyne Staritskaya, wife of the last appanage prince, Andrei Staritsky, son of Ivan III.
3. Ferapontov Monastery (In 2000, the Ferapontov Monastery complex was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List). Frescoes by Dionysius: 19 km from Kirillov stands the Ferapontov Monastery. The monastery was founded in 1398 by St. Ferapont, a monk and companion of St. Kirill of Belozersk. Of particular significance to Russian and world culture is the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin, painted over 500 years ago by the great Russian icon painter Dionysius and his sons. In 2000, the Ferapontov Monastery complex, featuring Dionysius's frescoes, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
4. Nilo-Sorskaya Hermitage: The Nilo-Sorskaya Hermitage, founded over 500 years ago, is located in a forested, marshy area 16 km from the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery. Over this time, it has experienced both spiritual and economic ups and downs. The monastery's history is closely linked to the personality of its founder, Nilus Sorsky (1433–1508), one of the founders of non-acquisitiveness. 5. Mount Maura

Kirillov Lemonade was first bottled in 1946. Today, it is produced by a local small business, the Kooperator Consumer Society.
The production facility is located in the town of Kirillov.
A significant milestone for Kirillov Lemonade was Kooperator's voluntary certification as a "Real Vologda Product" in 2015.
In 2023, Kooperator began producing a new cola-flavored drink. Unlike Coca-Cola, it contains no sugar.
The first batch of 624 bottles was released on May 17 and shipped to stores in the Kirillovsky District Consumer Society. Soon, every resident of the region will be able to buy their favorite lemonade and enjoy the new flavor.
Gingerbread, sausages, bread, and bakery products are also produced in the district. Food production in the district is carried out by the Kooperator Consumer Society and Kirillovsky Food Industry Co., Ltd.

4. Ferapontov Monastery. Dionysius Fresco Museum
The Ferapontov Monastery of the Nativity of the Theotokos was founded in 1398 by St. Ferapont. For approximately 400 years, it was one of the prominent cultural and religious educational centers in the Belozersk region.
The monastery's history is intertwined with important historical events during the formation of the Russian centralized state. The monastery gained widespread recognition thanks to the teachings of Cyril of Belozersk, Saint Martinian.
The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin at the Ferapontov Monastery preserves a unique ensemble of frescoes painted by the eminent ancient Russian icon painter Dionysius. In 2000, the Ferapontov Monastery complex was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The complex is a rare example of the preservation and stylistic unity of a 15th-16th-century monastic complex.

Sugorye—this melodious word in ancient times referred to the hilly part of the Belozersk Principality along the left bank of the Sheksna River. Today, these areas are known for their renowned monasteries—the Kirillo-Belozersky, Ferapontov, and Goritsky. In the early Middle Ages, settlements arose and developed here, inhabited by representatives of various Finno-Ugric and Slavic tribes. Scandinavian Vikings, seeking wealth and glory along the Great Volga Route "from the Varangians to the Arabs," were also frequent visitors to this region. The historical and ethnographic complex "Old Russian Settlement Sugorye" invites you to learn about the everyday life and way of life of the people of medieval Belozerye, immerse yourself in the mysterious and majestic era of Ancient Rus', and take a true journey through time.

8. Art Gallery
The art gallery in the village of Talitsy opened in August 2000, the only one in the Vologda Oblast exhibiting paintings in a rural setting. Its opening was prompted by a gift from fellow villager Yuri Belkov, Honored Artist of Russia. Belkov was born in the village of Zhelobnovo (one kilometer from Talitsy) and graduated from the Ivanovo Art School. He donated 176 paintings to the Talitsky Art Gallery. His landscapes feature prominently in his native places: "Cold Day. Volga-Balt" (1966), "By Lake Siverskoye" (1966), "Goritsy" (1967), and "Talitsy. Sunday. 1930s" (2002).
In 2005, Yuri Sergeevich completed a large painting, "A Meeting with Dionysius," celebrating the marvelous frescoes of the ancient Russian master in the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin.
One of the gallery's halls hosts exhibitions of local amateur artists.

One of the exhibitions located there, "Russian Izba," recreates the interior of a peasant hut with a Russian stove. The stove is authentic: porridge is cooked in it, milk is melted, and pies are baked in it. Incidentally, in Talitsky, porridge made from cereals and milk, cooked in the stove, is called "salnik." The delicious aromas of authentic peasant food are an invariable attribute of the "Russian Izba."
One of the exhibitions is dedicated to flax, a companion of women's lives for many centuries. Visitors can take part in lace-making and weaving workshops and try spinning on an antique spinning wheel.
