Brief History
The village of Kiltsa is located in the Mezensky District of the Arkhangelsk Region, at the mouth of the Kiltsa River, just 12 kilometers from Kimzha, which we recently wrote about. The first mentions of Kiltsa date back to 1623.
The historical value of Kiltsa is determined by the high degree of preservation of its original buildings. Sturdy wooden houses, some over a hundred years old, still stand in the village. These buildings are examples of northern architecture adapted to harsh conditions. Each house is decorated with carved balconies, patterned architraves, and decorative ridges on the roofs.

Sights and Nature
The key architectural attraction of Kiltsa is its architectural integrity and the preservation of the living environment of traditional wooden houses, many of which are over a hundred years old. Visitors can see examples of Mezen architecture that are still in use, rather than preserved in a museum.
Kiltsa is also famous for its votive crosses. Locals traditionally erected them "as a promise" to commemorate happy events, such as a healing or the birth of a child, or to commemorate hardships, such as crop failures. These crosses were believed to protect locals from misfortune and adversity. People still offer cloths, towels, clothing, and scarves to them. The most famous votive cross stands at the entrance to the village. A chapel was recently built in Kiltsa.
The village is located in the Arctic zone, which creates a harsh and majestic natural environment. The landscape is formed by taiga and tundra elements near the large Mezen River. The Arctic climate offers unique natural phenomena: in summer, you can experience the phenomenon of white nights, when the sun never sets below the horizon, and in winter, the region offers opportunities to observe the northern lights.

Accommodation
Due to its remoteness and the early stages of tourism development, accommodation infrastructure in Kilce is extremely limited, making it a niche, authentic destination.
There is a municipal guesthouse located directly in the village of Kilce. It has minimal capacity: just two rooms, each accommodating four people. The property is managed by the Kozmogorodskoye Municipal Administration. Advance travel planning and direct contact with local authorities for reservations are mandatory for visiting. For those seeking alternative options in the Mezen District, guesthouses and private accommodations are available in neighboring villages such as Kimzha, Pogorelets (Kuropatochka), Lampozhnya (Kibas Sports and Leisure Center), and the village of Kamenka, as well as in the district capital, Mezen.

Meals
Guests are provided with home-cooked, communal meals as part of their accommodation. For lovers of local cuisine, this offers the most authentic experience. The local cuisine is based on Arctic produce, including freshwater and sea fish, as well as traditional northern wild fruits such as cloudberries and lingonberries.

Museums and Crafts
Kiltsa is part of the Arkhangelsk Region's cultural tourism cluster, so for a complete exploration of the Mezen North's heritage, a visit to the neighboring village of Kimzha, also a member of the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages of Russia, is recommended.
A visit to Kiltsa is also inextricably linked with local crafts. The famous Mezen painting originated in the lower reaches of the Mezen River. This painting, traditionally using only two colors, red and black, decorated various household utensils, including spinning wheels, ladles, boxes, and chests. Studying the everyday life of northern houses allows us to trace the connection between the aesthetics of the painting and the functionality of the objects, enhancing our understanding of local cultural synthesis.

Calendar of Events
The village observes a traditional calendar tied to natural cycles, including religious holidays, as well as dates associated with the fishing season and the gathering of wild plants. Participation in these traditional dates allows one to integrate into the local way of life.

How to get there
The journey typically begins in Arkhangelsk. The first leg is the journey to the district center, the city of Mezen or the village of Kamenka.
Seasonality is a critical factor. Transportation can be significantly hindered or interrupted during periods of spring thaw or ice drift on the rivers. During the winter, ice roads, or "winter roads," may be used.
The final section of the route to Kil'tsa requires additional preparation. The roads are unpaved, and their condition is highly dependent on weather conditions. Independent travelers without personal off-road vehicles should arrange transfers in advance with local authorities. Transfers should be coordinated through the administrative authorities responsible for hospitality, such as the Kozmogorodskoye Municipal Administration.

Useful Information
Kiltsa positions itself as a center for sustainable and culturally responsible tourism. Visitors become more than just guests, but participants in the process of preserving and developing the village.
