The Buddhist complex "Burkhan Baabai" is a sacred site with a sand mountain, located nine kilometers from the Khoyto-Gol ulus on the left bank of the Ikhe Ugun River. The mountain is shaped like a giant dune 1,076 meters high. The sand deposits at the summit and base of the mountain are approximately 8,000-10,000 years old. The Tunka people have a double name for Burkhan Baabai—Shargai Noyon. According to legend, Shargai Noyon was a heroic figure who descended from the heavens to protect the Tunka Valley from nomadic raids. The khan was armed with a bow, shield, and saber, and was accompanied by four of his loyal palomino horses. Finding a sunny spot on a bare mountainside, the khan descended near the Khoyto-Gol ulus. The taiga rustled around him, and a mountain river flowed its clear waters in the distance. Shargai Noyon's impatient horses, descending, snorting and trembling, tore the mountainside with their sharp hooves, revealing white sand beneath the surface. This is how the sand that still exists today near Burkhan Baabai was created.
